The article covers the issues related to the development and testing of new additional professional education programs based on professional standards, which will allow the working specialists to improve their qualification level. The requirements determined by the professional standards lead the system of interaction between universities and employers to a new qualitative level and contribute to the creation of an integrated practice-oriented system of continuing education. To date, the goal of this process is to train personnel focused on innovative activities in the social and economic sphere of each region. In Belgorod State National Research University, on the basis of the Department of Biology and Natural and Landscape Complex «Botanical Garden», based on the professional standard, a training program for the profession of a working specialist in the field of ornamental gardening was developed in the direction «Growing, care and use of ornamental flower, tree and shrub plants in landscaping». The main emphasis in the Program is made on the study of biology, cultivation technologies and maintenance of ornamental crops, taking into account modern requirements to the laws of landscape design and green construction. The implemented program is aimed at developing an innovative approach to the treatment of plants based on the principles of the formation of species diversity in urban landscapes.
