The article contains the results of the research of ecotourism from the point of view of the system approach. As a result of this study the author formulated the following definitions: tourism as a social institution and ecotourism as its subsystem. The author also identified the subjective carriers of social relations, the social, economic, and cultural functions. The article is based on the work of arrangement, description and formulation of the functions of ecotourism and its trends. The author draws a conclusion about the availability and necessity of the development of ecotourism as an integrated subsystem of the social Institute of tourism
