Transformation of industrial spaces as a factor of creative economy development in Russia
The article analyses the impact of the transformation of former industrial territories on the development of the creative economy in Russia. The relevance of the research is determined by the simultaneous development of two processes: on the one hand, creative industries are taking shape as an independent sector of the economy that generates added value through intellectual labour, cultural content, and digital solutions; on the other hand, cities preserve significant arrays of former industrial territories that require new functional purposes. The aim of the work is to determine how the transformation of industrial spaces influences the development of the creative economy. The research methodology combines the analysis of scientific literature and regulatory sources, comparative case analysis, typological grouping of projects, content analysis of open materials on creative spaces, and quantitative analysis of regional economic indicators based on data from the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) and the Rating of Creative Regions of Russia 2024 issued by the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge of HSE University. The comparative analysis of Sverdlovsk Oblast and Krasnodar Krai demonstrates that the indicators of the creative sector – the share in gross regional product, employment, and the number of organisations – grow faster than the regional economy as a whole in both cases. This allows interpreting the development of creative clusters as a factor of structural transformation of regional economies. The redevelopment effect manifests itself both in industrially oriented and tourist regions, providing diversification of the regional economy and the formation of new points of post-industrial growth. The findings can be used in designing regional creative economy development strategies and urban environment management policies.
